PVC suspension polymerization
METHOCEL™ is an essential processing aid for the manufacture of high-quality PVC. An important characteristic of PVC is its ability to absorb additives – such as plasticizers, stabilizers and pigments – rapidly. To achieve this, a defined level of porosity is required; often obtained at the expense of bulk density.
The balance between porosity and bulk density is a consistent challenge for PVC manufacturers. Here, our METHOCEL™ grades can help to generate the specified porosity, while optimizing the manufacturing process and finished product quality.
Most of our recommended METHOCEL™ grades for PVC applications are food grade; please consult your account manager for more information.
METHOCEL™ Product Features | Functional Benefits |
---|---|
GMP manufacturing conditions Meets food grade specifications and testing requirements | Complies with food additive requirements Allows for food contact PVC |
Surface activity | Reduced interfacial tension Facilitates dispersion |
Suspension agent | Particle size control Uniform particle size distribution Reduced droplet size |
Film-forming | Encapsulates VCM droplets in a protective film Prevents monomer droplet coalescence |
Broad range of substitution levels | Consistent performance Enables custom porosity (final rigid / flexible PVC) |
Synergies with other protective colloids | Control grain porosity and particle size |
Product recommendations
Recommended Product | Viscosity (cP) | Porosity | Performance in Use |
---|---|---|---|
METHOCEL™ E50 | 50 | High | Low density, high porosity, allows for faster blending with plasticizer (flexible PVC), low VCM residuals |
METHOCEL™ F50 | 50 | Medium | General purpose suspending agent, moderate density |
METHOCEL™ K100LV | 100 | Low | Rigid PVC, high density, low porosity, glassy |
In paper manufacturing, it’s important that additives, fillers, and fibers are retained on the paper machine web during the de-watering process. The use of additives in filler retention applications has also become increasingly significant due to rising demand for high-opacity, lighter-weight paper and the growing cost of pulps.
Our METHOCEL™, POLYOX™, UCARFLOC™ and Scogin® products can deliver a range of functional benefits to your paper application.
Product Features | Functional Benefits |
---|---|
Non-charged polymers | UCARFLOC™ is used as a retention aid for pulps containing anionic electrolytes |
Film-forming | METHOCEL™ offers oil barrier properties in paper coating applications POLYOX™ enhances coating load and improves paper quality |
Product recommendations
Recommended Product | Functional Benefits |
---|---|
METHOCEL™ E | Processing aid; reduces organic contaminants from recycled paper (pitch and stickies control) |
UCARFLOC™ | Flocculation and paper fines retention due to high affinity for pulps and fillers (silicas, clays and linins) |
SCOGIN® | Paper sizing; film-former, smooth surface, improves grease and solvent resistance, reduces air porosity Paper coating; improves coating uniformity and printing, reduces coating defects |
ETHOCEL™ AQUACOAT® | Moisture barrier to protect paper surface |
Highly viscous solutions can be produced with the addition of TEXTURECEL™ carboxymethylcellulose or METHOCEL™ cellulose ether polymers to water at 0.5 – 5.0%. When formulated with freezing point depressants, such as salts, glycols or alcohol, these mixtures can be added to suitable packs that are flexible in the frozen state – and then used as ice packs for food deliveries or as cold compresses for first aid support.
Likewise, the gel packs can be warmed in a water bath or microwave and used as a warm compress for improved blood flow or reduced muscle cramps.
Advances in lighting technology, such as compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) bulbs and fluorescent lamps, require the manufacturing of phosphor slurry and premium sacrificial binders to function properly. Our POLYOX™ additives facilitate the development of high-performance lighting technologies, by supporting rheology control, clean burn-out, and more.
POLYOX™ Product Features | Functional Benefits |
---|---|
High binding efficiency | Clean burn-out Rheology control |
Excellent solubility | Tuneable viscosity (broad range) Stable viscosity (wide pH range) |
Solvent compatibility | Highly compatible with variety of dispersants and antifoams |
Our extensive solutions portfolio is available for a wide range of additional industrial applications and products.
